Upcoming: Solo Exhibition by Sarah & Charles For ten years now, the artist duo Sarah & Charles has been focusing on making stories tangible, stories that unravel in a continuum between fiction and reality. In their first major solo exhibition, The Suspension of Disbelief, they continue to work on the series Props for Drama, which was launched in 2009. A comprehensive project with several installations and two short films, the visitor enters a world of contradictions. The imagery derives from film as well as theatre and the visual arts. A visit to the exhibition gives us a figurative glimpse behind the scenes of this quirky duo. Nothing is what it seems at first glance…

Anneke Eusen's first solo exhibition 'NeubauStuck' @ LSD Galerie, Berlin

“NEUBAU Stuck”, is a work, which finds its existence in the compilation of materials from one period and its shape from another. So even if modernism tried to ban ornamental decorations, they have become “one” in contemporary street life of Berlin. The “Stuckleisten” draw an exact 1-1 floor plan of the most popular types of a modular Plattenbau. (PS2 and WBS70). Presenting these floor plans in a gallery space turns them into modernistic structures. Thematically these new works connect to the artist's idea about “changing values”. Even if we try to change from one ideal to the next, the actual reality rises with its application, and in that case change is just a rearrangement.

The official opening of OPEN M will take place at 3 PM. On 8 June, the museum will be open free of charge between 11 AM and 6 PM, and there will be performances and shows throughout the day. Welcome!

Solo-exhibition 'Deviatie' by Alice De Mont

Opening saturday the 8th of June.

Alice De Mont created maps that are reinterpreted records of existing places. She created these maps for an old man who is a character from her films. The old man is mesmerized by the maps and convinced by their depiction of reality. The maps were initially meant to be framed but De Mont redefined the original idea of using picture frames as a method of presentation. The frames instigated a new sculptural process wherein the research into the discrepancy between visual characteristics and functionality of the method of presentation has become the subject.

Andris Eglitis Receives Purvītis Prize 2013

Having received the panel of judges' highest evaluation, artist Andris Eglitis was awarded the third ever “Purvītis Prize” on February 15! Speaking in the name of the panel, the winner of the “Purvītis Prize 2013” was announced by Māra Lāce, director of the Latvian National Museum of Art (LNMA), and Jānis Zuzāns, chairman of the board of museum sponsor, “Alfor, Ltd.”. The award includes a considerable monetary sum – 20 000 lats (pre-tax, approximately EUR 28 500).

The Purvītis Award was established in order to gather information about events in the Latvian art world and to evaluate the most outstanding artistic achievements. The award is named after the Latvian painter Vilhelms Purvītis (1872-1945). The statutes of the award state that “the Purvītis Award is awarded once every two years to one artist or group of artists who represent Latvian art with outstanding work that is deeply associated with the events of its time and that acts as a link between contemporary life, spiritual ideals and absolute values.”

Jeroen Uyttendaele @ Overtoon

Overtoon, platform for sound art, has been running, as a backbone to develop the artistic practice of Aernoudt Jacobs. Since 2012, Christoph De Boeck has joined to co-direct the organization. From January 2013 Overtoon will be consolidating and expanding, as a new flexible and half-open production platform producing the work of both artists. It will also offer yearly long-term residencies to artists with the aim to produce their works. In 2013 Jeroen Uyttendaele and Jeroen Vandesande will be the resident artists.

The work of these four artists will be shown at the group exhibition 'Overtoon' at iMal.
