In Fia Cielen's work - a blend of video, drawing and installation- one might notice the presence of a mild subversion against a form of artistic practice that hides in the limitations of one medium.The artist has a true feeling for the absurd setting and a great sense of humour in her work, often countered by an uncanny, almost sinister atmosphere. Her work can be regarded as a wunderkammer, a hybrid oeuvre that raises questions about natural artificiality, transgression and metamorphosis.
"One word that might cover several elements of Fia's work is: deterioration. Beauty, morality, nature and body are all deteriorating elements of contemporary society, that therefore have to be polished and have to be glossy.Fia Cielen exaggerates certain of these aspects to point our attention on how idiotic we talk to and interact with our pets, and on how erotic body language becomes absurdly fragile, and dumb, once it is taken out of it's originalenvironment".(Jan Van Woensel)
